Blitz wins training award
2007 Sep 13 It was announced today that West Midlands firm, Blitz Games Studios, of Leamington Spa is the regional winner of the Edge Awards 2007, winning a prize of £10,000 for further investment into training and development of young people. The computer games developer battled it out to win the medium-to-large business category and will now go through to the national finals to be held in November.
Edge is an independent foundation dedicated to raising the desirability and status of vocational and practical learning among 14 - 25 year olds of all levels of ability.
Leamington-based Blitz Games Studios was founded in 1990 by twin brothers Andrew and Philip Oliver and now boasts over 200 staff. The Olivers are responsible for developing over 100 games since the early 1980s and their company is currently working on 9 new titles. Now boasting five separate divisions (Blitz, Volatile, TruSim, Blitz Arcade and the Virtual Experience Company) the company also continues its huge long-term investment into BlitzWare, its in-house technology, which provides one of the best game development environments of any independent developer.
Andy Powell, CEO of Edge said, “Edge is delighted to award this prize to Blitz Games Studios. Blitz has shown that it is creating some valuable experiences for young people in the West Midlands and has shown that hands-on learning is good for employers and employees alike. This is a great example of the good work we want to praise and reward.”
The Edge Awards rewards organisations that provide outstanding learning opportunities for 14–25 year-olds and is also rewarding individuals for their learning achievements. This year Edge is awarding over £300,000 to employers that provide quality apprenticeships, excellent work placements and other practical learning opportunities.
Geraldine Randle, Head of HR at Blitz Games Studios said, “We are absolutely thrilled to have won the Edge Award for the West Midlands. It’s fantastic to see that Blitz Games Studios's industry-leading commitment to education and training is being recognised by such a high-profile organisation. Giving our staff easy access to high-quality training ensures that staff retention and morale remains high. This in turn has led to improved skills and productivity, which help our business to become even more successful. This virtuous circle means that we can offer a level of job security to staff, in stark comparison to many other video game developers.”
Blitz Games Studios will be attending the awards ceremony held in London on November 22 to discover whether it has become a national winner. Journalists are invited to attend the awards ceremony at London's Camden Roundhouse.
